Difference between VirtualCenter server and ESX server

Hi,

I'm new to the VMware developement. Can anyone please explain me how ESX server differe from the VirtualCenter server?

As per my knowledge, ESX server is the one on which actual images are created and deployed whereas VirtualCenter manages the ESX servers (one at a time.) 'vSphere' has capability to manage more than one ESX servers at a time.

Is my understanding correct. Kindly answer my question.

ESX (the latest--ESX4) is a bare metal operating system which you can install direcly on your physical hardware. It is the hypervisor layer which helps you to operate multiple VM's on a single piece of hardware. The heart of ESX is the VMkernel which does all the magic (resouce management, VM management ...and a lot). Talking about vCenter Server (Previously Virtual Center server) is a management application which you can install on a seperate physical machine ( You can even have an virtual vCenter). Once your vCenter is licensed, you can start managing the ESX servers.

There are two ways to manage ESX. One is that you can directly log in to your ESX server with root password and manage it. Else, login to the vCenter server itself, add the ESX server so that your vCenter manages it.

vCenter is like a management station from where you can manage your multiple ESX servers.
