vCenter Update Manager and updating drivers

Hi to all,

recently I had a strange problem because I post this question.

I have cluster with 6 hosts and I did upgrade from 5.1 to 5.5.

Servers are DELL and I did upgrade with newest available DELL Custom Image in that moment and I did patching with VUM after upgrade. Upgrade was done before approximately one month.

After that I had problem with vMotion, problem was reported to support and suggested solution was to upgrade network card drivers (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2072515).

First thing I did is to download all patches using VUM and patch all host but patching is not upgrading drivers. I had to do this manually.

So, in situaton when I had freshly updated system, using DELL custom image and patched with VUM after that, I had bad network card driver... I would like to prevent similar situations in future...

How can I assure to have latest drivers like I can be sure that I have latest patches?

Can I upgrade drivers using VUM? Or I have to do it manually and physically on host using newest Custom image?

I deal with different HW vendors (IBM, HP, DELL, Fujitsu) so I would like to have some strategy for updates. Patches from VMware are OK but what with drivers?

Thank you for answer

Best regards

Goran

Hi

To get the custom/OEM VIB's you can to add Repositories/Download Source to your VUM.

Below is the Repos for Dell & HP

HP: http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml
