What are the resource restrictions on ESXi 5.5 free hypervisor?

Hi,

The configuration maximums for ESXi 5.5 are given in the following link:

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf

Are these maximums applicable for free Hypervisor also?  If not, then how do I get to know the resource limits on free vSphere Hypervisor 5.5?

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,

Hi,  I moved your thread to a more suitable location.

The limitations of the free version can be found here:

Free Virtualization with VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) | United States

It's listed under specifications.

The main difference between the free version and the paid version is the feature list. The free version is fully functional as a vm host with on host management, if you want centralized vCenter management, ESXi upgrade and patch management, vm client replication and backup, and vMotion you will need to go with the paid version (the vCenter Essentials or Essentials Plus is where most people start with the paid version).

The only thing different between the free and the paid are the license keys the software contains all of the functions, but must be enabled with the keys. There is nothing to install other than the new key and configure the new functions.

Hi,

the resources limits in 5.5 config maximus applies also for free ESXi 5.5 hypervisor with only one exception:

  • The vSphere 5.5 Hypervisor retains the 8 vCPU/virtual machine limit

See: VMware KB: Licensing for vSphere 5.5

For features comparison between paid versions and free hypervisor look at:

VMware KB: Product offerings for vSphere 5.x

Another restriction in FREE edition is remote management via (PowerCLI, vCLI, SDK ...) where you are allowed only to read-only operations.

Regards,

P.
