I'm trying to clone a VM and get an error that says, "Unable to access file <unspecified filename> since it is locked". What file is the error referring to?
Thanks.
Is it a powered on VM or powered off VM? Are you cloning in GUI or in command line?
The VM is on and I'm using the fat-client to do the cloning. It is a Server 2003 server and I'm trying to increase the size of the C: drive, during the cloning. There is enough space on the target datastore.
whether there is any other operation being done on the same VM? can you check the VM file with .lck extension? if you can find such file, file name can give you idea on which VM it is referring to.
it is happened due the VM files locked due to so many reasons:
for complete resolution see the below given URL:

Do you happen to have snapshots on that VM? Don't just check the snapshot manager but also check in the Virtual machine folder to see if there seem to be snapshot VMDK files there. This could be the issue. If you are using a third party tool or even VDP then you might need to shut down the appliance do a snapshot of your vm then do a delete all to get rid of snapshots to release this.
I re-cloned the VM, but didn't modify the drive size, and it worked. Odd.
Also, there are no snapshots.
