Question about backups

I am in the process of building my Hypervisor server and I have a question about backups. I will be using SATA drives in a RAID 10 configuration. I am also planning on getting Essentials, which include VMware Consolidated Backup. Will I be able to use VCB to perform daily backups of my VM's, or would I need another backup solution? Also, would it be best to run the backups from another VM or would it somehow be integrated into Hypervisor?

Thanks for the help!

Rob

Hi ,

You can use VCB only if you are using shared storage for the VMs, because in vcb the the storage that has all the vm files ought tobe shared with / exposed to the vcb proxyserver. Another option u have is to use the vdr or vmware data recovery to back up the VMs. vdr is the new option in vsphere 4.0.

VDR is good option as well.

is it any information for me or recomendation for the backup on this virtualization infrastructure.

the backup shoul had an application consistency and recovery at object level or file level.

the backup should be can backup the all microsoft product likes : active directory, exchange, share poin, sql server, etc and also can backup the database outside the microsoft like oracle and the last but the important is can backup the sap environment with oracle database on top of windows operating system.

any recomendation shoul be had many thank from me.

consideration for backup is the lead time vs data size

....and though vdr also needs shared storage or nfs or cifs it will work as long as the vdr appliance can see the vms to be backuped up.

....from what u have been sayying i think VDR is a better option than VCB because  u are using raid10 sata and not san/nfs

dear robmypro99,

if backup is become the consideration you must obtain the license to advance at least to utilize the vdr

this is good backup soution for smb

it can cover any operating system as long you install the vmware tools inside the operatin system guest.

another option is to backup manually for consistency must be turn off the guest and copy or clone to somewhere else.

or for online backup use the vcb, this can be done with the script or by the third party.

ask clearly about the license for the need of yours especially many vmware benefits are come with the ent plus edition but it is all depends on the need of clients

Thanks for the help guys. So if I had SAS drives I could use the backup solution included with Essentials? But since I have SATA drives I need to use something like what I see in the link Andre provided?
