Installation of new programs - must I do it from the console?

I'm trying to install all my preferred printers and programs onto a VM set up to run as a Terminal Server.  My intent is to clone this so that I don't need to repeat the same ritual for TS #2 and TS #3.  My VM is running Server 2008 R2 (64 bit)

I've been doing the printer driver and program installation via a remote session onto the VM.

I had trouble getting all the driver features to work on a Xerox252 and was told by Xerox support to install from the VM console, rather than from a remote session.  This worked.

I couldn't install Adobe Creative Suite from a remote session. It worked from the console.

I was in "change user /install" mode when I attempted the installations.

Am I missing some VMware rule about needing to install programs from the Console?  It's very cumbersome to use - with the choppy mouse and screen size doesn't match my monitor.

Thanks for any pointers.

Jim

There is no VMware rule. I have run into applications that detect RDP sessions and refuse to install or run. Make sure you have VMware tools installed and check out http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011709

I almost always use a console connection/window to administrate VM's.  I know of applications that also won't allow you to install them, or updates, via RDP. You can sometimes use an RAdmin connection to the server in order to perform the installs, but not always.

I simply put up with the Server 2008 choppy mouse movements (for now) when needing to perform installs/updates on those VM's. If I'm looking to do something quick, like check a setting, it's easier (for me) to simply open a console connection window and access that VM. Rather than fighting with RDP issues.

Another reason to use the console is if the program runs only the console.

I've seen some cases of software that open they Windows only in the console.

But in this case you can simple connect with RDP using the console session.
