How to monitor Raid on a Hypervisor server?

Hello all!

I have 2 servers (dell R420) running vmware hypervisor 5.5 and 1 server running version 5 I installed a few windows servers VM machines on them and everything is running great however I can't find a way to monitor the Raid and the hard drives state from the windows client is there a plugin I need to install or a license I need to buy? I can't find useful information on the vmware website I find it confusing.

I attached a screenshot of the storage monitoring I have now it does not show the actual controller which is the H710.

I am using the free vshpere client version 5.5.0 build 1618071

Thank you for your help!

Farouk

This picture already shows the status of disks and her status... you may can found the controller at PCI sensor.

Did you used the customized ISO from Dell ?

It does not show the actual controller and the raid configuration so that I can monitor the drives

What ISO from dell are you referring to? should it be installed on the windows vsphere client?

Thank you for your reply!

Could we not use the DRAC console for this?

You should be able to use Dell OpenManage Server Administrator. Dell OpenManage Server Administrator

I don't run a Dell shop, so I can't confirm, but it looks like the steps are something along the lines of:

  • Install the appropriate Dell OpenManage Server VIB on your ESXi hosts.
  • Install OpenManage Server Administrator on a Windows Server box.
  • Configure OMSA to Manage the Remote Nodes, providing the ESXi server information.
  • Monitor your servers through OMSA.

There are a few YouTube videos that detail the installation and I'd recommend watching one or two to get the idea of how it works.

I wrote a piece on using Dell's Management Suite Infrastructure for vSphere.  Hardware Inventory and Storage information is included in the vSphere Client plugin that may give you some information you're seeking.

http://virtuallymikebrown.com/2013/12/12/deploy-and-manage-dell-management-suite-infrastructure/

But this is just pulling the information from Dell's out-of-band management interface, iDRAC.  You could simply use this interface to view and manage your RAID controllers and RAID configurations.

All the best,

Mike

Hello Dee and thanks for the reply, I tried that but it looks like I don't have the right VMware client version or license I tried to follow the dell instruction but it seams that I am missing something.

After following those instructions and installing the VIB file using ssh the right controller still not showing up anyways I ended up installing dell open manage that's not the best solution but it is better than nothing.

thank you all!
