Fine-Tuning a Mobile VM

I recently created a Win2k8 32-bit Standard Server VM.  The purpose of this VM is to be a mobile VM to hand over to one of my colleagues to utilize as an Application for testing purposes while deploying some voice related requirements.  I have created this VM in ESXi 4.X HV and he will utilize this on his laptop running VMware Player.

The VM is a VM version 7 and it has the following specs at the moment:

  • 1 vCPU
  • 4GB RAM
  • 50gb Thin Provisioned
  • Win2k8 32-bit Server Standard OS

His laptop is running:

  • Intel I5 M560 @2.6ghz
  • 4GB RAM
  • Windows 7
  • Approx 50gb HD Free on his laptop

What can be done in this scenario to slim down the VM?  I notice that the space actually being utilized by the Guest OS is 12.5gb, does that mean I can slim it down to say 20gb?

Can I lower the RAM?

What needs to be taken into consideration when creating a Mobile VM as such?

How will this impace his system when he is utilizing the VM?

Thanks for all your help guys.

Hi,

Yep i'd look at 2gb RAM and 20gb disk as being sufficient, especially if it is a single app, depending on of course "how heavy" that app is in terms of resources but i'd start with 2gb ram
