I'm somewhat confused here, I see that "VMWare VSphere Hypervisor" is free. Looked like a type 1 (bare metal) hypervisor which is what I was looking for. I went to the download screen and downloaded these files
ESXi 4.1 Installable (CD ISO)
07/13/10 | 4.1 | 300 MB | Binary (.iso)
https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/p/activate.php?p=free-esxi&lp=1&a=DOWNLOAD_FILE&baseurl=http://download2.vmware.com/software/vi/&filename=VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0-260247.x86_64.iso
Vsphere client
VMware vSphere Client
07/13/10 | 4.1 | 268 MB | binary (.exe)
I don't see where I can apply the license. Everytime I log in I see a 60 Day evaluation countdown. I was given a key when I registered. It also told me to use "vmware go" to manage this but I don't seem to see that option. I did go to the software inventory and tried to scan but don't seem to be having any luck with this so far.
Am I doing the right thing here or should I be doing something different?
Your ESXi install will run in eval mode for 60 days licensed at the Enterprise Plus level. Once you're ready to switch to the Hypervisor edition, go to Configuration > Software > Licensed Features and click Edit to get to the screen where you can enter your license.
Hellp Fatbunny
ESXi es free but ,you add the ESX server to an Virtualcenter? In this case you must pay the license .
For apply the license, click Home > Administration > Licensing
Thanks for the reply,
go to Configuration > Software > Licensed Features and click Edit to get to the screen where you can enter your license.
from which application should I do this? All I have installed is ESXi on a server and the vsphere client on my vista64 client.
Either of them don't have a configuration menu. Is there some other app I should be using?
I don't have a VirtualCenter. Don't have money to spend either :smileycry:, just trying to do some learning.
Its ok I got it. Bit unintutive, but for others looking for this too,
Open Vsphere Client,
You be in the Home screen, if not, click Home in the address bar.
Double click the inventory window,
Highlight the root of the tree on the left pane, then in the right pane, you will have alist of tabs on the right (I presumed these were relating to the VMs directly)
Click on the Configuration tab
Under the Software list on the left hand side of this pane, the first option should be "Licensed Features"
There is an edit link on the top right hand side of this pane. Use the Enter key button on the bottom.
