ESXi 5.0 Free Edition - How to automate backups?

Hello All,

I've been digging through the help docs on this site for a few solid hours now and I'm still at a loss concerning the functionality of the free edition that I'm using. This website, along with all the different product editions are truly a mess to navigate.

I'm just trying to figure out how to automate backups (snapshots) of my VMs, but I'm not sure if/how this is accomplished in the free Hypervisor version. I have an extra ESXi server available to just be used as a backup machine, if that helps.

Can anyone help shed some light on how I would go about accomplishing this?

Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to the community!

For backing up ESXi free edition you can use Thinware vBackup standard edition, it's free!

Take a look at this;

http://www.thinware.net/Products/vBackup/tabid/202/Default.aspx

You can also take a look at this VMware article for more info;

I am going to try thinware.

I have a single VM on an ESX 5 host.  It is a small office, probably will never have more than the one VM.  Seems silly to buy anything.

The hardware on the old physical server was failiing, and it just made sense to P2V in 40 mins vs spend hours building a new server.

I basically want to backup the VM to another WIndows XP desktop in the office and have Carbonite or Mozy suck that up to the web.

If there is another free and easy way to backup this VM please post here.
