Doubt about how VMware hypervisor deals with storage disconnection

Hi,

I have some doubts of whats happens when the hypervisor lost connectivity with the virtual machine files.

e.g.

  • Storage with 5 volumes
  • 10 ESXi hosts with VMs stored in the storage

Here goes my questions:

  • If the switch, that connects the hypervisor with the storage, goes down, what happens to the VMs?
  • The operational system wasn't supposed to crash or something?

Have a read at this article; VM Component Protection (VMCP) - VMware vSphere Blog

If the FC/iSCSI switch goes down your hosts will enter in an APD state.

Check the article for more details about this state and the response to it.

vXav,

Thanks!

But it's only on vSphere 6.0 and above?

We are using version 5.5...

In vSphere 5.5 you won't have vmcp.

So in case of Apd you need to recover the paths or reboot the host to trigger ha.
