Hi Guys,
I am going to build a new Vmware server and I thought I'll ask the experts for help. Could you please let us know what you think about below configuration?
Should I expect any problems? Would you change anything?
- Asus P6X58D-E X58
- Intel Core i7 960 3.2 GHz
- Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
- Intel Gigabit ET Dual Port Server PCI-e Adapter
- 2x WD 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s
Cheers
Most motherboards work just fine. The problems are generally related to the embedded NICs and disk controllers. SInce you have a NIC that is likely to be supported the install should go OK. You will not have RAID support. ESXi depends on having a supported hardware raid device. Have a look at the HCL to verify the NIC. http://vmware.com/go/hcl
Assuming that all parts (e.g. motherboard, CPU & RAM etc) are compatible with each other, seems like a pretty solid base for a VMware server.
Are you going to try installing ESXi on this box?
If so, first thing i would do is check this resource...

Look up all of your hardware components in here to see if people have had success using these with ESXi
