Viewing ISCSI drives

We recently took over a client who was set up on vmware.  Their current setup has two iscsi devices in the configuration, both of which are beginning to fail in varying degrees.  Because we can not communicate with the individual that originally set up the configuration we are unable to determine if there is any actual data on the iscsi devices or not.  Is there a way in vsphere to explore the iscsi devices to see if there is any information being used by the vms (there are two vms).  Attempting to access the drives themselves has proven difficult because when accessed they tend to become unstable and begin to throw errors.  We would like a non-evasive way to determine if the vm's are actually using the drives or if they are just listed because they are part of the datastore.  The end game is to shrink their images where we can safely remove the iscsi devices and add more native storage space.
