Install of cli 5 in linux is now requiring http_proxy and ftp_proxy environment variables to be set but I have direct internet access via transparent proxy ie no client configuration.
Why is this a requirement and how can I get around it?
i dont think in direct connection require proxy settings ? any more screen short please ?

Good luck!
I've got the same problem. Trying to install vCLI 4.1 on Fedora and can't get past the http_proxy and ftp_proxy requirement. I have a direct connection, so no proxy configured.
This is what I get :
Do you accept? (yes/no) yes
Thank you.
http_proxy not set. please set environment variable 'http_proxy' e.g. export
http_proxy=http://myproxy.mydomain.com:0000 .
ftp_proxy not set. please set environment variable 'ftp_proxy' e.g. export
ftp_proxy=http://myproxy.mydomain.com:0000 .

Sorry, I said I was trying to install vCLI 4.1 -- that's not right, I'm trying to install 5. Works fine if I use 4.1 since it does not require the proxy settings. Why are they required for 5?
This was recently changed in 5.0 to help with the Perl module dependency install, if you have all the pre-reqs, you can use the following solution as noted here by netvope http://communities.vmware.com/message/1862765#1862765 which just comments out the exit statement to let you continue through the installation.
Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Apart from these issues if you are running it on a RHEL5.x system which is not exactly RHEL5.5 you will find that the script errors out. You can read more about it here http://www.datauniv.com/blogs/2013/01/25/install-vmware-vsphere-cli-on-a-redhat-system-with-no-inter...
