Adding a top-level tab to cluster object type (HTML5 based vSphere Client plugin)

Jump to solution

Is it possible to add a top-level tab for my own plugin on object type like cluster, host etc.?

The Developer guide has reference to adding extension point under Configure and Monitor tab view, but I would like to know if there is a way for third party plugin(html5) to add its own tab at the top-level?

Adding top level tabs to existing vSphere objects UI was never supported because it is not scalable once we have many horizontal tabs.  The three places you can extend the UI are the Summary page (with a portlet) and the Configure or Monitor views (with a sub-tab view).

Thank you for the clarification.

Since having top-level tab is much easier to access and also more screen real estate for the plugin, I was hoping that I would be able to add it there.

Hi,

Can you share a little bit about the UI screens you want to build that require these additional screen real estate.

The tabs following the Monitor and Configure tabs tend to show lists of related objects e.g. Hosts under a Cluster, VMs under a host, etc.

Do you have as similar case where you are showing a list of object related to the inventory object with large number of columns?

We're also looking into solving the problem of providing more real estate to the pages under Configure and Monitor as they are the natural go-to-place for vSphere users when they need to manipulate an object or troubleshoot it respectively.

Best,

Tony
