The "Server" is the workflow engine. It holds all the configuration, workflows, resources, etc. It runs/executes the actual workflows when needed and initiates communication with 3rd party systems it has been configured to Orchestrate. The 3rd party communication is facilitated through plug-ins such as the vCenter, vRealize Automation, PowerShell, AD, Infoblox, F5, HTTP-REST, SOAP, etc...

The "Client" is your developer interface that allows you to build and run workflows manually. As noted by Christophe, the workflows you have built (or have been provided in the expansive library of content that comes with the server) may be executed via Orchestrator's REST API.

Consider your e-mail:

Your e-mail "Client" allows you to Create/Read/Send e-mails to/from an e-mail SERVER.

An E-mail Server does the work of sending/receiving e-mails for your domain.

Hi Liyeqing009,

The relationship between vCenter Orchestrator and vSphere Web Client is, you can run workflows from the Web Client. Allowing you to execute vCenter Orchestrator Workflows while still in the vCenter Web Client.

The Orchestrator Server is a level of Automation in vSphere, it can do many many things you just have to program it. The VCO Team generally have some good use cases and cool stuff you can do it with, might be worth a browse around. Home

For the Mark-i-techture have a look at the videos below.

vRealize Orchestrator (vCenter Orchestrator): Server Provisioning | VMware Australia

A really simple use case, when I delete a VM I would also like that VM removed from Active Directory so I execute the Workflow I have developed to Delete a VM from my vSphere environment and also go to AD and remove it from there as well. Other VMware Products may use Orchestrator to Perform tasks, vRealize Automation uses Orchestrator to perform a number of a tasks.

Hope that helps

If I understand you right,

The Orchestrator Client is where most of the work is done on the Orchestrator Server, it is where you import Stub Workflows and configure the vRO server.

You can also design workflows in there, I believe a lot of functionality is planned or already implemented into the vSphere Web Client but I believe the vRO client is still needed for a large number of the features.

I haven't played much with 6, this information may be old.

Cheers

The server function is to run workflows that can be started by the vSphere web client, by vRealize Automation, or any third party system.

It also provide an endpoint for the vCO client to manage the lifecycle of the workflows.
