In looking at the integration with vRO and VIPR and few questions:
I'm using vrealize automation, so that pretty much defines vRO as the orchestration engine in terms of Vm provisioning and vCloud. When Should I take the EMC storage related aspects I need to orchestrate and use VRO for them directly, and when should I stand up VIPR and have vRO make calls to VIPR?
Hi,
i think both strategies are valid and possible. I would contact EMC to get the ViPR plugin, and information about its roadmap.
If the plugin provides out of the box workflows for the tasks you want to automate, then that likely will allow you to create your solution with much less effort.
Also, if EMC maintains the ViPR plugin in future, you will have not have to care much about updates of the backend storage systems, because ViPR and the ViPR plugin (hopefully) abstracts the version details and keeps the plugin compatible.
On the other side, if you now (and in foreseeable future) only have a few, small (aka. easy to implement) automation tasks toward the storage system, that you need for your overall VM provisioning / lifecycle processes, then adding ViPR might be an overkill (and introduce more complexity in the overall architecture than needed).
So as usual the answer is: It depends 🙂
Hope this helps!

I just completed a POC with the Vipr plugin and it is pretty slick. 4 minutes to provision a 5TB lun automatically
can you share the details of the version you have integrated. ?
We never moved past the POC stage for this and this was a few years ago so Im sorry I do not have any current information to share on this
