How to asses and optimize current vSphere & vCenter

Below is our vm infrastructure:

License purchased on: 23 December 2009

Version: vCenter 4.0 Foundation (max 3 hosts) and vSphere 4 Enterprise (max 6 cores)

Current setting:

vCenter 4.1 (x1 physical server) & ESX 4.1 (x3 physical server)

Is there any check list to determine our environment is equiped with all necessary VM requirement?

Thank you,

P/s: By the way, I am not sure where to assign this discussion topic into which group.

Hi,

Not sure what are your expectations but for vCO there are two types of licences: player and server. You can check this in the vCO web configuration in the Licenses tab by clicking on the vCO server link.

For example on mine:

Serial number : XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
License owner : VMware
Target : vCO server
License edition : vc
Support : Gold
vCenter Orchestrator mode : Server
Product : vCenter Server 4 Standard
Expiration : Tue Jan 01 00:00:00 CET 2013
License type : Site

A server license allows to author workflows, a player license allows only to run workflows (from the library or from a third party woho would have author them).

Hi cdecanini_

This is the report from vCO License details

Serial number : XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
License edition : vCenter Server 4 Foundation
Expiration : Permanent license
vCenter Orchestrator mode : Player

In this case, what should I improve in my environment?

If you need to author worklows you need to upgrade your vCenter License to vCenter Standard.

Please contact your VMware sales representative for further information on licensing.

From the hard and troublesome that I am facing to manage this vCenter ... I planning to install the version 5.0 and remove all previous modules.

So far, only 12 VMs running in production and 2 in UAT stages with max 3 esx hosts.

Can I just get vCenter Standard upgrade with FOC from vCenter Foundation? Smiley Wink

Thanks Christophe.
