Change 'root' user password

I have started looking at Orchestrator, and I was prompted to change the password for 'vmware' and one other 'administrative account' (not sure what this one is) when I clicked on Orchestrator Configuration. I have clicked on Appliance Configuration several times and I have not been prompted to reset the 'root' password, I am still able to log in with 'vmware' as the password. Is there a way for me to log into the Orchestrator console through vCenter and change the root password via the command line? Or is there some way to force it to ask me to reset the 'root' password?

If you are able to login to the vCO Appliance Configuration using root / vmware, then you should also be able to login to the console via vCenter as root. Once logged in, simply type passwd and press enter, then specify your new root pw.

Ok, thank you, I just wanted to be sure that doing it this way wouldn't mess up anything.

But for later working you should configure AD or other LDAP accounts.

So you can define what accounts are only "users" and which one are "Administrators"

best regards,

Mike

Yes, thank  you. I have done that, but for some reason the root user was not prompting for a password change. I wanted to be sure to get that changed as a last step.

The appliance has one root user which is the OS root. You can login with this user from the vCenter console or from the vCO Appliance config page. If you go to the page http://host/ (no SSL) and try to follow links Orchestrator Configuration or Appliance Configuration you will be again asked to change the default OS root user password if it is still the default one. You can use the appliance without changing it - but it is a good practice to be changed in the begging as some important settings are configured with this user (updates, network settings).

The configuration of the Orchestrator itself (e.g. authentication, DB, plugins, restart services, etc.) is made from user vmware and you cannot log in without first changing this password.

At the end you have the users who are actually the end users for the vCO (by default vcoadmin, vcouser and other) that are better to be controled from external LDAP/AD if you have such.

Hope this long post, makes things clearer.
