Active Directory: Search for user based on specific attribute

Wondering if it is possible to search for a user based on an attribtue (say based on email address)? I can see that the ActiveDirectory.search() API supports wildcard search for one of various object types. However, I cannot figure out if/how to specify query criteria using AD attributes?

I would also appreciate an answer to this question; I am attempting to query AD for computers with a specific "SerialNumber" attribute, and the documentation is lacking.

Has anybody been successful in using the ActiveDirectory.search() method for anything other than the name attribute?
