VMware Operations Manager Enterprise 5.0 Forensics Features

Hello to everyone!

I am trying the Operations Manager Enterprice 5.0 (trial version) for some days and i am a little bit confused on something, so i would appreciate some help! I am studying the Operations Manager Enterprice 5.0 getting started guide, which explicitly refers some Forensic Analysis Features, of the program, but i really cannot find that option. Has anyone found or using that option? I would really appreciate some help on that! Thank you!

PS: i also attach the pdf i use

So, in practical terms, when you say that "You need to see Custom UI and vSphere UI as two different products" what exactely do i have to do to be able to use the Custom-UI?

The answer has been given in this thread already.

To clarify:

In the vSphere client, the 'Plugin' which you have a screenshot for is simply the vcops-vsphere URL embedded in the vSphere client.

We call this the 'vSphere UI'.

The Custom or Enterprise UI is not available at this view.

The Custom UI requires a unique set of permissions, and generally is LDAP based in regards to Authentication.

So, if you're an 'Admin' in vCenter, that doesn't matter in the Custom UI because it's LDAP backed (which I did mention in an earlier post).

To further strike the point:

Serial, I really think you would benefit from reading our admin and user guides for this product.

Are you sure your trial is Enterprise? Usually the trial copies are standard. Anyways, you can find forensic info in the vcops-custom UI.

Hi Sergios,

The UI you're visiting is <IP-Addresss>/vcops-vsphere

the UI that Jeremy is visiting is <IP-Address>/vcops-custom

The Custom UI is a feature of Enterprise and Enterprise Plus.

It has a different web server and more features, so it's accessed from a different path.

Hope that clears it up for you 😃

As Michael stated the vcops-custom UI is only available in the Enterprise. This is why I asked if you were sure you were running Enterprise. Usually the trial / demo is the standard version. From your interface you can click on About to view which  version your are runing:

Good luck!

What's the error you're getting when logging in?

Does the user you're logging in have the vCOps permissions in vCenter?

Is it an LDAP imported user?

The Custom UI uses LDAP first, and then fails back to vCenter credentials.

So, try adding your domain into your user name to see if that helps, otherwise post a shot of the error.

When you log into the vsphere-custom UI you need to use the original Admin account you used to install vCops (or the default if you haven't logged in and changed it).

The vcops-vsphere UI will use vSphere credentials that have the appropriate access privilege assigned.

To log into the vcops-custon UI you need to use the vCops administrator account or an account you imported through LDAP with admin rights, which I assume you have not done yet because you have never logged into the vcops-custom UI.

Hello to all and sorry for the delay but i was away, for another project. To answer the questions i can say the following,

when i login to that interface https://###########/vcops-vsphere/loginPage.action i can login normally by using my credentials, which look like that "DomainName\UserName" and my password. Note that i didn't install that software, but i was given Admin rights.

But when i use the following link to log in, https://###########/vcops-custom/loginPage.action i get an error saying "Wrong user name or password"

Since i have Admin rights, shouldn't i be able to login to the Custom-UI too? :smileyconfused:

Hi Serial,

the Custom UI has it's own user management, you need to setup your own roles, user/group permissions inside the custom UI. This also makes perfect sense as you might like to give Application Owners access to it etc. and those should not get access to your vCenter Server.

You need to see Custom UI and vSphere UI as two different products, even if they use the same framework.

Hello Yves!

Thank you for the quick reply, Ok i got your point now. But allow me to ask a silly question, since i am not very experienced user. First of all, what i did with the help of a colleague was to install the Operations Suite 5.0 (60 days trial) through the .OVA file. But after that, as i mentioned earlier i can only get access through the web interface( https://###########/vcops-vsphere/loginPage.action ) or by logging into Vsphere Client. There, i can see the vCenter Operation Manager as a plugin (i think the proper name is Vapp) -please check the image- but still i get the same interface, which is not the custom UI.

So, in practical terms, when you say that "You need to see Custom UI and vSphere UI as two different products" what exactely do i have to do to be able to use the Custom-UI? Install something else besides the Operations Suite 5.0 60 days trial? or do some other actions through vsphere client? If yes could you give me some directions over those actions? Thanks a lot!!

Hello Mikero,

Thank you for your answers. About the documents you proposed me to study, i have already read them. I am not very technical though, that's why i didn't understand some things. But i will study them again, eventhough i believe that these documents are outdated and they are not refering to the version 5.0 of that software. To give you an example on that...

On this pdf http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcops-5-installation-guide.pdf in page 17, it says "Run the VMware-vcops-1.0.exe file". But we are talking about version 5.0 right? i don't know if this is just a typo, but the first time i studied those guides i found several mistakes like that. So i don't know if the guides contain several typos or if they are outdated. In addition i noticed that that quide http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vcenter/vmware-vcenter-operations-manager-eval-guide.pdf which looks more up to date, according to what i see when i am using the trial version, does not mention anything about forensic features , i think.

But as i told you i will study the guides again. In the meanwhile please check my remarks, if you have some free time. Looking forward for your feedback.

Serial-

I think the point he is trying to make is that your question has already been answered. No matter which version of the document you look at the basic concepts are the same. When you deploy the vAPP you are required to change the default admin password. This is the account you should be using to log into the custom UI. If you do not have this account I would check with your vCops administrator and either request rights into the UI or ask him to provide whatever information you are looking for. By your own statements you are not very technical. If you can not figure out, using the documentation, how to log into the site then you probably should not log into the site. I am not trying to be rude but the fact is the custom UI is the administrator portal to configuring the application.

Good Luck!

Hello critical3rr0r,

The strange think is that my administrator (the guy that installed the software), had tried to log in to the custom UI by using his credentials. But he didn't manage it either. To be more precise. You say "When you deploy the vAPP you are required to change the default admin password". My administrator did that when we installed Vcops, but later on when he tried to use the new credentials he could not login. Note that the installation took place exactly as the following video tutorial shows. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwRdGDhI0lc.

Nevertheless, as i noted i am just an intern, trying to learn and not an expert. But in my humble opinion, i think that when we're talking about such a state-of-the-art platform (and so expensive of course) the documentation should be more clear. To give an example on what i am saying.. All videos on youtube (by vmware) or the very enlightening guide http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vcenter/vmware-vcenter-operations-manager-eval-guide.pdf  are very clear on the installation, features etc but only in the way they appear in the vcops-vsphere gui. But when it comes to some more advanced features like forensics, that exist on the custom -UI, (or the custom UI itself) the overal picture is not so clear.

But please take that not as a critisism, but just as an opinion. Anyways, when my administrator (who is a VMware expert) returns by the end of the week, we'll try to solve that issue again, now that i have your valuable feedback. Then i will make a final post about the results and hopefully mark the thread as solved. 🙂

Thank you all!!
