Monitor ESXi Services with vROPS

Good morning,

I have been asked if it is possible to monitor ESXI services with vROPS. We are currently running 6.4. I have searched all of the alerts but I don't see any that pertain to services.

I am specifically looking to monitor the following services:

  1. hostd
  2. vpxa
  3. vpxd

Can this be done via vrops?

Thanks in advance

While you can't specifically monitor the ESXi services, the vpxa and hostd services are monitored indirectly by the host connection to vcenter.  If either vpxa or hostd are not running the host will become disconnected from vcenter and vROps should trigger the alert named "Host has lost connection to vCenter Server".

The vpxd service doesn't actually run on the hosts since it is the vcenter process.  If this service isn't running vROps will not be able to collect data from vcenter and the adapter instance will trigger alerts.  In this case watch for adapter instance alerts such as "Adapter instance Object is down".

There is also a vcenter management pack on the solutions exchange that will monitor all of the vcenter services.  This is a better approach to monitoring vcenter if you want more details on the health of all of its services.  It uses the endpoint operations agent which will need to be installed on the vCenter server.

This is not possible with vROPS out of the box. The only possible solution would be to use the Endpoint Agent on the host but there is no support for ESXi for the Endpoint Agent.

But the more important question is, why do you want to monitor these services?

Greetings!

As of today, there is no solution in vROps which can monitor these services for an ESXi host.

In case you are interested to monitor VMware SDDC stack, you can try VMware SDDC Health Management Solution https://solutionexchange.vmware.com/store/products/vmware-sddc-management-health-solution

Hope this helps! Smiley Happy
