Is it possible in a vRO view to display custom field data for a VM in a list view?

Hi

Im building a view containing list of snapshots and snapshot sizes, is there a possibility to fetch up any custom Fields from the VMs in this list?

(Annotation Fields, for eksempel Notes for the Virtual machine)

If so through what data Object is this visible?

VRO 6.0.1

Hey Frode,

I don't think you can actually select the annotations property in vROPs for custom views. But what you can add, is "vSphere Tags". The way you do this is when you are selecting your metrics you press the little square shown below in the top left corner of the metric selector. This toggles the metrics to switch over to "Properties" of the object (in this case a VM). Under the Summary section you can select vSphere Tag.

I know it's not exactly what you were asking for, but hopefully that helps.

I would like to raise this issue once again.

Is it possible to collect and display annotation field of virtual machines in vRO? We are using this field to store short information about virtual machines.

vRO Version 6.2.0 build: 3528905

Yes. The annotation will appear as a instantiated property (annotation name) with a metric called "Value" in that instantiated group.

If you find this or any other answer useful please mark the answer as correct or helpful.

Hi mark.j!

Can you post guide how to add this metric "Value" in list view?

Hi,

What you are loking for are the custom fields (annotations) in vCenter. They are called Custom Tags and can be found in Properties | Summary | Custom Tags.

The vSphere Tags you can also find in Properties | Summary are the VM tags of vCenter.

You can easily generate a report that contains all your annotations. Saidly filtering for "empty" strings is not possible in vROPS (as of 6.6.1). So the ONly alternative is to do create a manual process or use PowerShell or vRO.

The manual process with vROPS would be:

  1. Run report
  2. Export report in CSV
  3. Import in EXCLE
  4. Creat Filter on the first row
  5. For each Colume
    1. Select for "-"
    2. This now shows the VMs that have this anotation not set.

Well..its not a good solution and lets hope that at some stage we can filter by "empty string"...but it works with what we have.
