Dashboards - Custom UI - VM Utilization

Hello and greetings from Portugal,

I'm new to vCOps and I'm trying to create a dashboard that shows me from my virtual machines universe which one's are almost being used.

The idea it's to see if we can reduce the number of virtual machines we have but for that we need to state the users "why" we want to delete that machines.

Thanks in advanced,

Best Regards,

Diogo Sousa

Diogo,

what version are you using? 571 comes with some excellent out of the box vm focused dashboards on Custom side of UI. If older version then maybe try a topN and resource will be Virtual Machines.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately I'm using 5.7.0 and cannot upgrade to 5.7.1 by now.

Can you just please guide me about how to create that dashboard? Smiley Happy

Hi Diogo,

You can also use two of the "Planning / Views" views to identify machines suitable for deletion.

The views that you need to look at are:

  • Powered-Off Virtual Machines - available on cluster, datacenter, VC, World
  • Idle Virtual Machines - available on cluster level

Hope this helps,

Alex D.

Thanks Alexander.

So....it means that if for example in a month interval a machine as a CPU % Idle Time = 100% isn't being used?

Basically yes - I cannot envision a user activity that doesn't create at least some CPU activity.

However this view might not contain all of the unused VMs. You might have a VM that is not used but have some scheduled job (example: antivirus) that creates some CPU activity and prevents the VM for entering the Idle VM list.

What I would recommend is:

1. For VMs in Powered Off list - most obvious candidates for deletion.

2. For VMs in the Idle VMs list - most obvious candidates for power off. Then in a month you can do another loop and delete again more VMs.

Thanks,

Alex D.
