Backing up vCops 5.0.2

Hi guys,

We are using Veeam Backup and Replication to backup our virtual infrastructure and i am looking how to backup my vCops vApp?

What you guys are doing?

Are you aware of any best practices or recommendation for backing up a vApp?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Pascal,

the question is how big the data loss is you could accept. The problem is both VMs need to be in sync and in case for recovery you would need to rebuild the vApp around it...

Ideally you set it up that both VMs are nearly same time backup, so parallel as possible, the bigger the time difference between both the bigger the problem you will have.

If you need a clean backup only chance is with shutdown VMs, still leaving the vApp recovery issue, but that way at least DBs and JMS would always be in sync.

In practice most customers have fixed backup plans running in parallel, which can be recovered with some cleanup and manual vApp rebuild.

Hi Pascal,
Hi,
Veeam says they support backup of vApps, so you should be OK.  There are a couple of things to note...
KB 2031890 describes using VDR 2.0 to perform a vApp backup, but in reality this should apply to any vApp aware backup solution.  The functionality relies on VADP, so if your solution supports VADP (which I believe Veeam Backup and does) then you should be OK.
If, however, you have a backup solution which is not using VADP then you can "break" your vApp and back it up as traditional VMs or guest OS.  KB 2031899 has details on managing a "broken" vC Ops 5 vApp.
Of course, I'd recommend you test your backup! Smiley Happy
