vra 8: Thick/Thin disk cloning

I am looking for how to get the initial VM to be thick or thin.  I see that it is possible for any additional disks (provisioningType) but I do not see any way to set this same thing on the original clone of the vCenter template.  We have a requirement to have a mix of thick and thin, depending upon the datacenter.
