How to resolve this issue?

This is caused by a change in Maven archetype plug-in 3.x which affected code generation from Maven archetypes. Long story short, you need to change the command line and replace:

mvn archetype:generate <parameters>

with:

mvn org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-archetype-plugin:2.4:generate <parameters>

Not working. Getting the following error:

OK, it seems that you are hitting https://blog.sonatype.com/central-repository-moving-to-https

Could you add the options -X -e to the Maven command line and provide the produced output (these options will enable printing of debug/error details)?

Also, could you provide more details about your environment, like what version of Maven do you use and how does your settings.xml look like?
