vRA 8.7 How to set custom MAC Address during provisioning from vRO?

Hi,

in vRA 7.6 we used vRO workflows to set custom MAC address for VM by passing key "VirtualMachine.Network0.MacAddress" into VM properties. We are trying to do same thing during migration to vRA 8.7 but we are stuck for few days.

Our use case:

  • We do not have any IPAM because we want to have exact CUSTOM MAC address binded to exact IP address and exact hostname.
  • We are using Active Directory based DHCP and DNS and we need to have each VM deployed with exact hostname from pre-populated DNS and DHCP so VM name will be FQDN and if somebody will use this FQDN, it will be translated to correct IP which is assigned by DHCP to provisioned VM
  • When somebody requested VM in vRA catalog, vRO workflow was started, it requested hostname and Mac address from SQL pre-populated table for 500 VMs and afterwards put back following key to set CUSTOM MAC Address to ensure that DHCP server assign proper IP address which belong to exact hostname

Anybody find out or know how to set custom MAC address during VM provisioning in vRA 8.7?

for others who need same

we used as workaround vRO workflow which execute PowerCLI to change MAC address of VM and subscribed after Compute is provisioned.
