VRA 7.4 and SQL 2017 Basic Availability Group - supported?

For a resilient VRA installation SQL Always on Availability Groups are supported for SQL Enterprise only.

However SQL 2017 Standard Edition does support a single database availability group technology names Basic Availability Groups

The vRA 7.4 documentation seems to suggest that VRA only creates and uses a single DB

Would this work and would it be a supported configuration?

Although SQL 2017 is supported as a database in 7.4, the documentation states that AAGs are only supported with SQL 2016.

Indeed The docs do say that, however that is a SQL licensing constraint as far as I can see, not a technology constraint – a sql listener is a sql listener whether you create two replicas or six.

Also if SQL 2016 is supported for AAG, then it stands to reason that in time SQL 2017 will be supported for the same technology

So why the constraint?

Making an assumption for what should work invariably causes issues down the line. If you require an official statement from VMware as to the support posture of such a configuration, you may want to open an SR or else talk to your partner/TAM/SE. Generally speaking, if it isn't explicitly stated as being supported, do not assume it is or will even "work".
