Vmotion vs VM memory size

Hi,

We want to P2V DB server with a lot of memory. Do you have a memory limitation for vmotion? What's the max memory for a VM is recommended for a vmotion without problem? If we build VM DB server with 64 GB of memory, do we go in problem?

Thanks!

there is no limit that vmotion cannot support, for such size of VM just make sure that you have best practice for vmotion (dedicated vmotion LAN and etc) and you will be fine ..

In addition, it will be better if you keep such a high memory VM(64GB) in low load stats(less memory pressure) while doing vmotion.

depends:

1) How much memory in physical server ?

2) Swap file location should be in share location.

You can give 64 gb to vm ,with normal i/o it should work. Just check with some best practises as well

Thanks

The only limit is what is supported by VMware in how much memory for a VM.  With vSphere 4 that is 255GB, now keep in mind doing a vMotion of that size will take some time and I personally have seen dropped pings when doing large memory vMotions even with a 8GB v1000 network trunk.
