Essentials Plus has HA so does that also mean VMotion is included as well?
Or is it a case of the only way a VM is migrated is if the original host goes off line and it is powered on the secondary host, but the ability to VMotion manually is locked out.
Thanks!
Hi,
Welcome at the VMware community forums!
As the features list on here: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf page 8 there is only HA and no vMotion support for Essentials plus.
So this means that if host FOO goes down, then your VM can be restarted automatically on host BAR.
Note that in order to use HA you need to have your VM's located on shared storage, so that the VM is registered with both hosts.
Hope this helps,

Advanced, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus all have vMotion. I don't see it for Essentials(+)

That is DRS not vMotion at that point.

Why FOO (btw that is a euphemism for a different spelling of that word...), why not KLONDIKE -- BAR or PIANO -- BAR..
Thanks for the confirmation, still in the planning stages for this project which will include shared storage so I was hoping that HA and VMotion were bed buddies, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
RParker, I beleive DRS handles VMotioning machines depending on the load of the host. If one host goes off line and the VM is powered on by the secondary machine that is HA.
Hi Richard,
Heheh, it is my programming background that leaks through.
Yes I am fully aware of the word fubar. Mathematicians would use letters like X, Y and Z. Some people would use A and B, I do that at times as well.
But I've been educated to use "foo" and "bar" in code examples.
So it is just used as easy to comprehend example names, no real reason beyond that.

Yes, but DRS is still involve in admission control and placing the VM on the least loaded host. So it's a combo of HA/DRS involved in getting the VM back online on the other host.
I am currently planning our virtual infrastructure and really do not care about foo going down and bar taking over. However, what possible recovery scenario's are there when FOO goes down and all you have left is Q.... Is it possible to install the virtual machine on a Q with some downtime. Downtime over here is not the issue, redundancy is.
Thanks in advance for replying!
Hi, maybe is too late, but, at this time(09/09/2010) vSphere Essentials Plus Version 4.1 Include Vmotion.
