IBM BladeCenter H and IPMI

Hello,

I'm trying to configure Distributed Power Management on ESX 4.0 and IBM BladeCenter H chasis but without success

I don't know where to start because I'm really new in server technologies like IPMI (BMC). Do you anybody use this feature on this chasis?

I will be really happy if someboby will help me with this trouble.

I`m stuck in the same place. It seems that you can not connect to IPMI (BMC/IMM) of the Blade outside of BladeCenter Chassis, meaning only BladeCenter Chassis Advanced Management Module (AMM) can connect to Blade IPMI.

To quote: "Instructions in this section do

not apply to IBM BladeCenters. IBM BladeCenter do not have IPMI remote

access to the BMC on a Blade (the BMC IP address is not available

No idea what to do now 😕

Well I managed to resolve or rather bypass the issue. You see ILO/IPMI are not the only solutios to use DPM, you can use Wake-On-Lan with proper configuration ie.: NICs configured speed on Auto, VMotion port on standard vSwitch (not distributed dvSwitch) and every thing worked like a charm.

Just for everybody and Google searchers to know, standby with wake on LAN are the correct way to setup DPM in IBM BladeCenters. Make sure you have vMotion well configured in your environment and a NIC with wake on LAN support on the management traffic vSwitch. Before setup DPM try to standby and power on each host at the cluster just to make sure it will work.
