Dell R810 - Intel Xeon L7545 EVC not supported

I have an ESX cluster with Dell R710s and Dell R610s with EVC enabled.

I am trying to add a new Dell R810 and it says EVC is not supported on this host.

The server has the Intel Xeon 7545

KB 1003212 (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003212) says that Intel Xeon 7500 supports EVC.

The hardware compatibility list says Dell R810 with Intel Xeon 75xx is supported with updates.

http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&deviceCategory=server&product...

I ran updates and now have ESX 4.0 Complete Update 2. But it still says not supported.

Has anyone else seen this?

thanks

what is the EVC mode you selected for the CPU family? example will be Core 2, i7 and etc.

You need to ensure you set it to the mode that both Intel 7500 series and Intel 5500 series are compatible.

I have the 810s (intel 7500) in their own cluster at the moment and it wont allow me to choose any EVC mode. So they cant even do EVC mode on their own, never mind mixed with the 5500 processors.

EVC cannot be enabled while there are powered on VMs in the cluster.

Thanks for the reply.

Let me clarify. VMware says the 7500 supports EVC.

When I add a new host to the current EVC enabled cluster it says it cannot add the host cos it does not support EVC.

So I created a new cluster, put the 810s in that cluster, there are no VMs on the this new cluster, and EVC in any mode cannot be enabled, still says it's not supported.

It is supported, my problem is not how to enable EVC, its why does it say its not supported when it is.

I have read elsewhere that the Virtual Center sever needs to be updated to Update 2. I have to schedule a time to do that.

Thanks for this, however I already mentioned this link in my original post.

Again, to clarify, this compatibility list says the R810 with Intel 7500 supports EVC but for my server its telling me it's not support.

Just checking...did you enable Intel VT and MMU feature in the BIOS? Also it's a good idea to check Dell website if there's any BIOS updates.

VT is enabled , Disable Execute is enabled, in fact all feature under processor settings are enabled.

BIOS is 1.03 which is the latest available on the Dell web site.

I updated the Virtual Center Server from 4.0 to 4.0 Update 2 and now EVC is supported on the R810s with Intel Xeon 7545 processors. I was able to add these R810s to the EVC enabled cluster.

thanks for all the input.

Resolved!
