DL380 needs virtualization into Vsphere4.0 Suggestions?

I have a server that I am looking to virtualize. It is a DL380. I currently have a Vsphere4.0 enviroment running on 4600 Sun servers and plan to virtualize this system. I understand that PtoV2.1.1 has corrected errors that now make it possible. My question is the following:

1. Can a DL380 be emulated in VSphere4.0?

2. Can someone point to a document that recommends a process to get this done efficently and with little issues?

3. If you have completed this, what was your experience with this?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forums -

1) You will not emulate the DL380 - you will actually migrate to a virtual machine where the physical hardware will be replace with virtual hardware

2) You will want to take alook at the documentation for VMWare Converter - http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vcc_pubs.html

3) Using converter had worked very well for me in the past -

Check also if you have some constraint for a P2V:

  • do you have software with some kind of hardware protection?

  • do you have "strange" hardware devices, like FAX card?

Keep in mind that you, after a succeeded import, deinstall all of the HP Agent, HP Website, HP Array Controller Software and so on.

You do not need that stuff in the virtual environment. I virtulized a lot of DL380 in the past. And all works fine. What application is hosted with this server?

Hardware can't be emulated. Only resolution would be to use virtual box with a hack; so its illegal. Thanks.
