Server Heartbeat and Windows 2008 64-BIT

I was planning on a future purchase Server Heartbeat but it appears from the Server Heartbeat pdf that it isn't support on Windows 2008 64-BIT yet. It isn't even support on 2003 64-BIT yet. My plans were to bring my vCenter server up to 2008 64-BIT this week and then plan in my budget for next year to get Server Heartbeat. Has anybody run Server Heartbeat on 2008 64-BIT or is there any plans for VMware to bring the application into a supportable state for Windows 2008 64-BIT.

With the major differences between the x86 and x64 arhitecture, addional development was required to complete x64 compatibility.

vCenter Server Heartbeat today supports vCenter Server 2.5 base thru update 4 as well as vCenter Server 4.0 all on Windows 2003 X86 only. There will be an update 2 of vCenter Server Heartbeat by the end of the summer which will then support vCenter Server 4.0 on Windows 2003, 2008, x86 and x64.

Hope that helps.

Hi. We also plan to bring our vCenters to version 4 on W2k3 R2 64bit at end of summer. We would like to use Heartbeat as for for protecting the vCenters.

Justin, can you say if there will be a beta version available of Heartbeat 5.5 Update 2 in the near future?

Thanks.

Regards

Markus

Yvan, unfortuantley the update 2 release has been pushed to early October. This is due to some updates for vCenter server being delayed.

The release has been delayed due to an upcoming update to vCenter Server. The GA of the vCenter Update and vCenter Server Heartbeat Update 2 is now November 19th, 2009.

Yvan, the update 2 of heartbeat was posted 11/19, I saw it pop online early evening (gmt -6). for the evaluation you'll need to sighup for a vsphere evaluation to download.

I'm astonished they don't have 2008 R2 support. Do we have to wait another six months for R2 support? VMware really lags MS releases in their OS support.

vCenter Server currently does not support Windows Server 2008 R2 and so the requirement for vCS Heartbeat to support this environment is currently not needed. I'm pretty sure it will install and run but you will be unsupported. vCS Heartbeat will be able to protect Windows Server 2008 R2 as soon as vCenter server does
