vmware tools don't work right after cloning machine

When I clone a virtual machine or make an ovf out of one and redeply it the vmware tools don't seem to operate properly.  They show up as installed and running, but the mouse gets hung up within the console of the virtual machine as if they weren't installed.  I have to hit ctrl + alt to get the mouse out of the console  Additionally, the mouse movements within the console are pretty sluggish as compared to a cleanly built machine.  I'm presently running vCenter 4.1.0 build 258902 with ESXi 4.1.0 build 433742.

Has anybody seen this behaviour before.

I'm not saying this will fix your problem, but your vCenter build is older than your ESXi Build.  My suggestion would be to get your vCenter build to U2.  I say U2 because it addresses a lot of issues in U1

Also, what is the guest OS where you are seing this behavior? If W2K8 you should update you update your display driver

The OS that I've seen it on the last couple of times is Windows 2008R2 64-BIT Standard.  I thought I saw it on Windows 2003 also but could be imagining things and I don't have the time to verify that now.  I tried the workaround in the KB and it doesn't work.  We are going into our peek retail season now so any upgrades to vCenter are out of the question.  I guess I'll have to wait until February when I got to vCenter 5.  Thanks for your assistance.

This is still happening in vcenter5 with windows 2k8 r2 .

i did fresh install. not domain joined.

updated all windows.

then sysprep ( http://jameskovacs.com/2008/10/15/how-to-sysprep-windows-server-2008/) checkmarking "Generalize".

upon shutdown i converted to template.

deployed new server from template

used custom wizard to saved settings, etc.

newserver provision accordingly and vmwaretools still isn't working. it's there but not working properly.

i connected the vmwaretools iso to the cd drive and

did a repair, reboot and

that was what did the trick.
