vmotions over shared network causing issues - suggestions?

Problem: Our vmotion network is shared among all other traffic including host, virtual machine, etc. It's all utilizing the same 10GB pipe (dual nic for 20GB throughput).

We have been having a lot of issues lately with vmotions flipping database servers and causing other apps to time out while they are being vmotioned. Right now we have no throttling or sharing limits set via NIOC.

My question is, what are our options? Would you suggest to use NIOC and set shares on the vmotion network, throttle the bandwidth to something like 5GBps on it, or use traffic shaping?

Until we get a dedicated network for vmotions we'll have to perform one of these steps (or multiple). I'm just trying to get a consensus first.

Thanks!

use NetIOC ... also I suggest your teaming policy  is set to Load based option to effectively utilize both 10GbE uplinks.

Here are some useful design guides for 10GbE networking and NIOC:
