vcenter on top of esxi?

I'm trying to setup a test environment where I can get vmware view up and running. I am assuming I need vcenter so I installed that on a machine and view on another(both as virtual machines within esxi).

When I try to put on vsphere on the vcenter computer it will install, then I'm setting up the hosts and it seems to find the esxi server but then when it tries to set it up as the host I'm monitoring it fails. Do I need to setup an esxi vmserver inside of the esxi to test this?

I seem to recall seeing a document/video of this but of course I can't find it now.

Take a look on the following KB:

Also you can try restarting the management agents, but I am pretty sure the patch resolves the problem.

So you are saying you are having problem on the moment you add the ESX to the vCenter? If the ESXi is running with the free license, you will not be able to add it - enable the evaluation on this ESX or license it so you will be able to perform the operation.

If this is not the case, let us know the error you are receiving.

It is set to evaluation mode already on the ESX server.

So, what's the error and when you are receiving it?

It's pretty annoying that the download that is provided is not the latest patch version, but it did work once I got the esxi server patched.

Thanks.
