vDataCenter

Hello everybody

I'm completely new in VMware world...

excuse me if I'm posting this question in the wrong place...

we decided to use VMware as the virtualization solution for our environement. we have two datacenter in 2 locations connected with 110 Mbps link. the main datacenter will hold all production VMs and secondary datacenter will hold the test/development VMs.

our initial plan is to have one vCenter server with one Virtual Datacenter. we planned to have 2 clusters for each (physical) datacenter.

i'm wondering if we need in the future to create another vDatacenter (vDC) in the secondary physical datacenter to hold all VMs in that location, is it easy to associate all VMs in the secondary datacenter to the new vDC?

do you recommend to do such step on the future or change our plan to have 2 vDC right now?

vDataCenters are really used for organization and management. If it was me I would use 2 datacenters, 1 for each location and then create clusters and add hosts as needed in either environment

thanks a lot for your response...

what about if we want to migrate certain VM from main datacenter to the secondary datacenter, is it applicable?

It's less a question about migration VM's across datacenters or clusters, that will work.

It's more about on how you move the VM's files from one location to the other. If you present all datastores to your ESX servers you could migrate within the GUI, provided the bandwidth is sufficient. Depending on the size of your VM's this could take a long time.

A hot migration require a shared storage between datacenter and probably is not your case.

If you have iSCSI you can try to route iSCSI networks.
