ok I put in a support call to vmware. they are saying that version 4.0.0.208111 is the same as the one on the web site that is labeled 4.0.0.208156

They said the version # on the web site is wrong. They have put in a request to have that fixed.

Apparently I was the 2nd person to call in with that issue within the last 24 hours according to the rep that was assigned to my case.

You do not uninstall vCenter 4.0 before installing Update 1. You start the Update 1 installer on the vCenter 4.0 server. The installer detects your previous installation and proceeds with an "upgrade" of the database and binaries. Make sure you take a SQL backup of the vCenter database before you begin the update. If you have a good backup you can always easily roll-back to the previous installation in the event you have problems with vCenter 4 Update 1.

For a clean reinstallation is correct.

But you can also do an upgrade...

Start the install, choose that you have an existing DB, specify the ODBC DSN of the current DB, and the install will perform an upgrade of vCenter Server.

You have to repeat the steps also for new version of vCenter plugins.

Strangely enough I'm trying to tackle this topic right now. When I run the installer on my 208111 vCenter server, instead of offering an upgrade option, it brings up the uninstall wizard.

Sounds like I might be seeing the same thing as the original poster.

I'm having the same exact issue.

We are in the middle of an IT audit and one of the findings so far is that our Vcenter server is not up to date. We are on version 4.0.0.208111 but it appears there is a newer version. when I try to run the installer, it just tells me to uninstall.

any help would be appreciated!
