OK my question is If I spin up a new vcenter server can it be linked to a virtual center 2.5.X box and if so what is the best way to achieve this.
no. In order to use linked mode both must be vCenter4. I believe Standard or higher. But you cannot link a vCenter2.5 and vCenter4.0 together.
