vCenter Upgrade 4.1 Query?

Hi,

We have currently vCenter 4.0 U2 we are planing to upgrade to vCenter 4.1. I have read the document that vCenter 4.1 support only 64 bit operating system. But we have our vCenter 4.0 U2 in 32 Bit operating system. Can any one please guide me how to upgrade the vCenter 4.0 U2 32 bit OS to 64 Bit OS?

Hi,

You can create a VM (or a physical server) for a new instance (4.1) of vCenter which will be the replacement for the current instance (4.0U2).

This VM must have a 64-bits OS like Windows 2003, Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2.

If you have the vCenter Database on the same server of vCenter instance, you have to backup this database and restore it on the new server (or another server reachable by vCenter).

You also have to backup the SSL certs and restore them on the new server.

All this process of backup/restore you can do it manually or using the Data Migration Tool.

Finally, you install the new instance of vCenter Server using the restored database.

Check out the Upgrade Guide of VMware Documentation, specifically the "Upgrade to vCenter Server on a Different Machine and Upgrade the Existing Database" section (page 33).
