vCenter Service Statis: Storage Management Service failed

In the vSphere Client (4.0.0) under vCenter Service Status I see one service were the initializationis always failed: Storage Management Service.

When I want to open the "Datastore -> Storage Views" I get an error message that this service is not running.

Where can I find this service and enable it?

Are you using Windows Integrated Authentication for your vCenter services?

I had same problem and found out that it was caused by missing rights for the user, I added the user to "Act as part of the operating system" and it worked... also fixed a performance graph issue

Into vCenter Server you can see that all "automatic" VMware services are running?

No more idea, you have to look in VC log to see the reason of the problem.

I've got a similar problem with a MS patch that brock the webservice, but in your case seems that this service is working.

By any chance are you using Oracle as the back end to your vCenter database? We've found that when using Oracle the order of entries in the tnsnames.ora file makes a big difference to if your vCenter will work or not. We've also found that some services don't like having an FQDN for the tnsname, and other need it. So it really all comes down to the set up of the database.

We have our tnsnames entries configured shot name, then fqdn order. vCenter just isn't as robust when you have Oracle at the back end and requires a lot more configuration/testing.

Did anyone find a resolution to this? We're running remote sql with sql authentication. The VC service is running as the local system.

so solved my problem. i did for testing follows:

1. create a new service account (with logon as service rights, and domain admin rights)

2. on the remote sql server, i gave "public/db-owner" rights for the service account for the vc-db

3. on vc server i run the services (virtual center server & web service) with the new service account

4.in the virtual center i also gave "administrator" rights for the service account

5. everything is runninig fine now Smiley Happy

could be i gave to much rights as it's rquire, but now i can start removing some permissions until it don't works again....
