vCenter Server 4 Essentials - licensing question

Hi,

Question about licensing....Thanks to reply only if you're absolutely sure. :smileycool:

We will have 4 physical ESX 4 servers soon. So our license for vCenter Server - VMware vCenter Server 4 Essentials for vSphere - will not be enough. The essentials plus permit to manage only 3 physical servers.

I don't think that is possible to upgrade. We will have to buy new version - not for essentials. This one will be able to manage our whole infrastructure with 4 physical hosts.

My question is (and I'm almost sure of the answer, but would like to confirm that by someone from vMware) : Do we have to change just the licence for VMware vCenter Server 4 Essentials for vSphere or do we have to replace ALSO the licenses on the hosts (which were part of the bundle).?

We do have enough licenses for Processors Sockets (6). It means that we do not need any upgrade for the "hosts part". (the serial number is different than the one for vCenter Server).

Anyone?

Thanks

To be absolutely sure I would log on to your VMware account, choose to manage your licenses and contact VMware over the "Email a Licensing Specialist" button.

Unfortunatley I couldn't find the "License chat" button, anymore. That was a great help as you could get in contact with a license specialist who also had access to your recorded licenses at VMware.

I got the official reply from Vmware. We would have to change both licenses. Not only for vCenter Server, but also for the hosts, since it's the whole package that works together... -:(
