vCenter DB size

Hi, I have two vCenter server's DB that just ballooned last month. Both VC have about 150 ESX hosts and over 1000 vms. It went from 100GB to 256GB and 178GB in a matter of a month. My first Q is what is the right size for DB? Are there any formula to figour out the DB size based on ESX and VM #? 2nd Q is how can I decrease teh current size? I think there are some unnecessary data in the current data and I want to get rid of it... Any thoughts?

Thanks

see here http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vs_pages/vsp_pubs_esx40_u1_vc40_u1.html for the DB calculator.

You can also do this within vCenter, by going to Administration--vCenter Server settings Statistics.

Finally, you can run your DB in simple mode which will help in the DB size, in particular the log file

There's a sizing document on the documentation page. Which files for the database have grown (the data - mdf / ndf or the log - ldf)? Have you made any changes to the statistics setup in vCenter?

The database logs everything every vm migration, every performance stat, every VM every minute detail just about. So I would investigate the logs and see what changed, did you upgrade to U1 of VC 4? Because upgrading will change settings sometimes as well..

but SOMETHING changed. Are you the only VC admin? Did someone change the amount of stats or how often they are purged.. I would look around.

There is no "default" size for the DB, it depends on many factors.
