vCenter Chargeback on ESX 3.5 hosts

Does vCenter 4.0 chargeback allow the chargeback based on CPU cycles used? If I upgrade a vCenter to v4.0 to manage ESX 3.5 hosts will I be able to perform chargeback modelling on those hosts?

There are third party products which are designed to provide that kind of reporting. vKernel () is the one I am aware of, but there may be others.

I see, I haven't played with vSphere much yet, I remember being told before Christmas that vCenter would have inbuilt chargeback. looks like they have made the prduct a separate product

Does vCenter 4.0 chargeback allow the chargeback based on CPU cycles used?

Yes. You can set your CPU costs per GHz-Hour and then vCenter Chargeback will allow chargeback based on used CPU cycles. Please choose appropriate billing policy that includes "Actual Usage" to be considered.

If I upgrade a vCenter to v4.0 to manage ESX 3.5 hosts will I be able to perform chargeback modelling on those hosts?

Yes. vCenter Chargeback supports any ESX hosts managed by vCenter Server 2.5 U3 and above, that includes vSphere 4.0.

Vkernel's Chargeback appliance will also do this. We measure how much CPU is used by a group of virtual Machines in mhz and help you assign a cost to that.
