are you really supplying right username and password?

do one thing please, cancel dialog box of add new identity source, make sure that it has been removed from 'Work in Progress' area too.

start the 'Add new identity source' dialog once again.

supply all the information and test connection, normally test connection would fail if username/password are not right.

try to OK, (please keep an eye on all the fields of this dialog box, if any of the field gives you red border around it, that means validation is not successful even though test connection is successful)

see if this helps.

is this right username for your domain?

I have the same issue and actually came here hoping someone had the answer.  I am using our domain admin credentials and cannot get it to join either.

The "Join active directory" operation failed for the entity with the following error message.

The format of the specified computer name is invalid [xxxxx]

I actually get this error and I am using our AD domain name

I know this is a necro-post but I am having a similar issue.  I am not able to join the VCSA 6 to the domain.  The error I receive is:

user [xyz@xyz.com] cannot access domain [xyz.com]

I am using a UPN format domain admin account. username@domain.com

I checked the DNS settings and they appear fine.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

EDIT:

As ridiculous as it sounds, the problem was caused by a special character in my password!  Changed the password and BANG it worked!

@gbentz

long ago, but i've found no explanation for this anywhere.

Just wanted to document that it seems like when you are trying to use the same domain name for SSO and domain join u get the "the format of the specified computer name is invalid" error message.

Maybe someone from VMware can confirm this cause.

Kind regards

Mathias
