vCenter Alerts & Alarms Guide? vSwitch alerts?

I'm new to configuring custom alerts.  I'm running vCenter 4.1 Update 1 (newest version).

I'd like to setup some vCenter alerts that will email me when a any vswitch or dvswitch loses an uplink.

I can't seem to find an admin guide on vcenter alerts & alarms.  Does anybody know of a site or know if VMware has a doc on this?
