vCenter 5.5 says windows 2012R2 guest has VMtools out of date

I have a rather unusual situation.  I just installed a Windows 2012R2 guest VM on my ESXi5.5 host in vCenter5.5.

vCenter says the following:  VMtools is out of date on this VM

BUT, when I try to install VMTools, it reports that there is a later version of VMtools already installed so it does not complete the install.

How do I resolve this?

Try shutting down and starting the machine (powercycle).

The issue occurs because a soft reboot is not detected by VMware Tools.
