In upgrading form 4.0 to 4.1 environment, does vCenter 4.1 communicate with the 4.0 servers?

What is noticeably gained in 4.0 to 4.1?

yes, vCenter 4.1 can manage ESX(i) 4.0.x Hosts, as well as VI3 Hosts
